Glossary
For: Pilots · Hangar admins · Mechanics
pilotadminmechanicEvery RampMates word you are likely to meet, with the page that explains it.
Account balance – In hangars that bill their members through RampMates: payments less everything you’ve flown, including flying that hasn’t been invoiced yet. A + means money on account. Compare Due now.
Aircraft access – Which aircraft in the hangar you may use. Everyone sees the whole fleet, but opening, flying or booking an aircraft needs access to it. See Seeing an aircraft vs. flying it.
Archived – An aircraft a hangar admin has retired. It leaves the picker and the schedule, nothing is deleted, and an admin can unarchive it. See Add or retire an aircraft.
Bill the hangar – A flight the hangar pays for instead of the pilot, such as a maintenance run or a repositioning leg. It’s the Bill the hangar, not the pilot switch when you log a flight, and the Logbook marks it Hangar pays. See What a flight costs.
Booking – Your hold on an aircraft for a stretch of time on the Schedule. See Book an aircraft.
Booking rules – A hangar’s rules for the schedule: slot size, how long and how far ahead you can book, limits per member, no-shows and reminders. See Set the booking rules.
Check out, check in – Checking out a booking hands you the aircraft and starts your flight; checking in closes the flight and completes the booking. Other clubs call this dispatch. See Check out and check in.
Close out – Ending an open flight by entering the readings you land with. See Start a flight and close it out.
Cost model – How an aircraft’s flights are priced: Fuel only, a wet rate (fuel included) or a dry rate (plus fuel), per hobbs or per tach hour. See What a flight costs.
Daily summary – One message each morning covering what happened across the hangar the day before, sent only when something did. See Choose what you’re notified about.
Due now – In hangars that bill their members through RampMates: what’s still owed on invoices the hangar has already sent you. Compare Account balance.
Dry rate – An hourly rate that doesn’t include fuel; the fuel burned is added on top. See What a flight costs.
Find a time – A search for openings of the length you need across the aircraft you can fly. See Find a time.
Fleet – All of a hangar’s aircraft. See Add or retire an aircraft.
Flight in progress – The bar across the top of the app while a flight is open on the aircraft, showing who is flying. See Start a flight and close it out.
Frozen rate – A flight keeps the rate and fuel price it was flown at, so changing the aircraft’s rate never reprices it. See Frozen rates.
Grounded – An aircraft with an Immediate squawk open. It’s a warning to everyone, not a lock. See Report and resolve squawks.
Ground only – An entry for hobbs time that wasn’t a flight, such as an engine run. It’s billed to the hangar. See Log a flight you already flew.
Hangar – Your club or partnership in RampMates: its members, its aircraft and its settings. RampMates labels it Hangar: and its name, because a hangar is often named after a person. See Belonging to more than one hangar.
Hangar admin – The role that runs a hangar: its aircraft, members and settings. See Roles.
Hobbs – The meter RampMates runs on. A flight’s hours are its ending hobbs minus its starting hobbs, and oil, inspections and engine time all count hobbs hours. See Hobbs and tach.
Inspection – A check that comes due by the calendar (the annual) or every so many hobbs hours (a 100-hour). See Inspections.
Log MX – The Dashboard’s shortcut to Log maintenance. On a mechanic’s phone it’s also the middle button of the tab bar.
Maintenance block – Time on the schedule when an aircraft is held for maintenance, set by a mechanic or a hangar admin. See Block an aircraft for maintenance.
Mechanic – The role for whoever maintains the aircraft: squawks, maintenance, oil, inspections and engines, but no flight time. See Roles.
No-show – A booking nobody checked out in time. RampMates marks it and tells the pilot. See Check out and check in.
Open flight – A flight that has been started and not yet closed out. An aircraft has at most one at a time. See Start a flight and close it out.
Pilot – The role for members who fly and log. See Roles.
Read-only – A hangar whose RampMates subscription needs attention. Everything stays readable, but nothing new can be logged, booked or changed, and the buttons and forms that would do it are grayed out. See Start flight was refused.
Recurring booking – The same aircraft at the same time every day or every week, booked in one go. See Book every week.
Split a flight – Turning one logged flight into two legs, for a stop along the way or two pilots sharing the flying. See Split a flight in two.
Squawk – Something wrong with an aircraft, written up so it gets fixed. Also called a ticket or a discrepancy. See Report and resolve squawks.
Standby – A place in line for time someone else has booked. If it comes free, the booking is yours. See Get on standby for a taken slot.
Tach – An optional second meter, turned on per aircraft. The only thing it changes is what a flight costs, under a per-tach-hour rate. See Hobbs and tach.
Time since overhaul – An engine’s hobbs hours since its last overhaul, shown as Since overhaul (SMOH). See Log an engine overhaul.
Type booking – A booking for any aircraft of a type – Any C172 – rather than one tail number. See Book an aircraft.
Unlogged flight – A gap in the Logbook where the hobbs moved but nobody logged a flight. See Log a flight you already flew.
Wet rate – An hourly rate with fuel included. See What a flight costs.
